In 1980, I was a keen cyclist and a fan of Bernard Hinault who won the Tour de France five times. Four of us went from work to Portsmouth and crossed to St Malo where we watched the Tour on three consecutive days, including a rest day. We had our cycles with us, so we could get about easily. Unfortunately my hero, Hinault, took ill with a knee injury two days before reaching St Malo and retired, so I never saw him. Still, it was a memorable experience and still fresh in my mind.
